The Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF) is looking for a web developer to join our team based in Brussels!

CETAF, the consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities is a unique scientific organisation of more than 77 institutions across 25 countries in Europe. We bring together natural sciences and natural history museums, botanical gardens and research centres in a joint effort to promote biological and geological collections and foster the associated taxonomic knowledge and expertise.  

 

Job description 

We are looking for a web developer to join our General Secretariat team based in Brussels. This person will provide technical support towards our role in EU projects, specifically in the building  of online services that facilitate the discovery and digital access to valuable data and knowledge  obtained from Natural History collections. S/he will also help with internal organisational technical needs in relation to CETAF online tools. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Maintenance and optimisation of the CETAF Website.
  • Support in the development and maintenance of our new data portals for displaying information about collections (CETAF Registry of collections) and specimens (GeoCASe). This includes front-end and back-end developments, such as the implementation of data pipelines, data linking, and data visual displays.
  • Contributions to the development of a Taxonomic Expertise and Service Market Place under the EU project TETTRIs which CETAF coordinates. 
  • Contributions to the development of an online policy assessment tool that is being built under the EU project BGE.  
  • Contributions to the implementation of dashboards to showcase the major CETAF-related data (e.g. collections across CETAF institutions).

 

Requirements, experience and skills. 

  • University degree or equivalent experience in Information Technology,  Computer Science, or another position-relevant domain.
  • Highly proficient with WordPress, HTML/CSS and Plone. 
  • Experience in designing user interfaces 
  • Working knowledge of JSON, SQL, REST APIs, GitHub, JavaScript and other programming languages.
  • Experience with Vue.J.S., React or Angular, Postgres and with data visualisation software (e.g. PowerBI) and MediaWiki.
  • Proficient in working with large amounts of data. 
  • Knowledge of standards and data models such as schema.org and TDWG biodiversity standards. 
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Proactive, positive problem-solving attitude and well organized.
  • Can work well independently (and remotely when necessary) and within a team
  • Knowledge of data security and cloud storage. 
  • Full authorisation to work in Belgium. 

Desirable 

  • Familiarity with Research Infrastructures and working within EU projects.
  • Knowledge of any other European language (French or Dutch, especially)
  • Cross-cultural sensitivity and appreciation;
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics 
  • Understand the concepts of FAIR data.

  • Start date: as soon as possible, based on candidate’s availability;
  • Work pattern: Full-time (38 hours per week);
