WBF2026 calls for urgent action to transform biodiversity governance

The fourth World Biodiversity Forum (WBF2026), held in Davos, Switzerland, from 14 to 19 June under the theme Leading Transformation Together, concluded with the adoption of a resolution calling for urgent and transformative action to tackle the global biodiversity crisis.

The resolution stresses that reversing biodiversity loss requires a whole-of-society approach, bringing together researchers, policymakers, businesses, civil society, Indigenous Peoples and local communities. It also underlines the need to strengthen collaboration across sectors and generations to support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Among its key messages, the resolution highlights the importance of making the best available scientific knowledge accessible and actionable. It calls for stronger science-policy interfaces, improved biodiversity monitoring, and greater investment in research and knowledge infrastructures that can support evidence-based decision-making.

These priorities closely align with CETAF’s mission to strengthen Europe’s natural history collections, advance taxonomy and biodiversity research, and improve access to biodiversity data. Museums, botanical gardens and other natural science institutions play a fundamental role in documenting biodiversity, providing trusted scientific evidence and supporting conservation and restoration efforts.

The World Biodiversity Forum, organised by the University of Zurich with the support of an international scientific committee and partners, has become one of the leading international platforms for biodiversity science and dialogue. The 2026 edition brought together experts from across disciplines to discuss practical solutions to biodiversity loss, ecosystem restoration and transformative change.

The full text of the WBF2026 Resolution, including its recommendations for strengthening biodiversity governance, science-policy cooperation and international collaboration, is available on the World Biodiversity Forum website.

The opening ceremony of WBF2026 is also available online. The recording includes a keynote by Becky Chaplin-Kramer (WWF and IPBES Co-Chair) on transforming biodiversity science, followed by a high-level panel discussion on leading transformative change for biodiversity with representatives from science, policy, conservation and the private sector.
