CETAF supports a joint call for stronger EU biodiversity funding

CETAF is among 98 organisations calling on the European Union to strengthen biodiversity commitments within the next Global Europe Instrument (GEI) under the forthcoming Multiannual Financial Framework.

In a joint letter coordinated by the Wildlife Conservation Society EU Office, conservation, environmental, animal health and welfare, development organisations, research institutions, youth groups, foundations, companies, livelihood associations and local authorities urge the EU to raise the climate and environmental spending target in the next GEI to at least 50%, with a minimum of 15% dedicated specifically to biodiversity.

The signatories emphasise that healthy ecosystems and the wildlife they sustain are fundamental to environmental, social and economic resilience. They play a crucial role in climate mitigation and adaptation, food and water security, public health, sustainable livelihoods and long-term stability.

The organisations also underline that explicitly prioritising biodiversity within the Global Europe Instrument would strengthen the effectiveness of EU external action while supporting the EU’s international commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

CETAF position

This call aligns with CETAF’s own position on the proposal for the Global Europe Instrument. In its recently published position paper, CETAF highlighted the importance of maintaining clear, legally anchored and measurable biodiversity commitments within the GEI to ensure policy coherence, predictability for partner countries and the EU’s continued global leadership in tackling biodiversity loss.
