The Libroscope in Action: turning biodiversity literature into FAIR knowledge

How can millions of pages of biodiversity literature be transformed into FAIR, interconnected and AI-ready knowledge?

The CETAF e-Publishing Working Group is organising The Libroscope in Action: Turning Biodiversity Literature into FAIR Knowledge, a three-day hands-on training course taking place from 26 to 28 September 2026, immediately after the TDWG 2026 Annual Conference in Oslo.

The course will introduce participants to the complete biodiversity literature data lifecycle—from discovering relevant publications and extracting semantic data to making that information FAIR, connecting it with global research infrastructures and preparing it for reuse in scientific and AI-driven applications.

From publications to reusable biodiversity data

Through practical sessions, participants will learn how to:

  • Discover and build reproducible literature corpora using OpenAlex.
  • Extract and annotate biodiversity data with Plazi and GoldenGATE Imagine.
  • FAIRify taxonomic treatments and material citations.
  • Connect literature-derived data with GBIF, Catalogue of Life, ChecklistBank and BiodiversityPMC.
  • Work with persistent identifiers, interoperability and semantic workflows.
  • Design research projects that reuse biodiversity knowledge across global infrastructures.

By combining literature discovery, semantic extraction, FAIRification and infrastructure integration, the course will demonstrate how information currently embedded in scientific publications can be transformed into accessible and reusable digital knowledge.

The training builds on previous work undertaken through DEST and will give participants practical experience with the tools and workflows needed to unlock biodiversity data from scientific literature.

Registration

Places are subject to selection. Interested participants should register by 31 July 2026. Selected applicants will receive confirmation on 3 August 2026.
