New CETAF member: the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe (Germany)

CETAF57 brought many important things to CETAF. However, undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding and exciting evelopments was the admission of two new CETAF member institutions: The Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe (Germany) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology University Museum, Trondheim (Norway).

We would like to present them and to know them better, starting with the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Karlsruhe (State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe). We had a chat with Prof. Dr. Martin Husemann in order to know more about its incorporation to CETAF.

How will you describe you Institution?

The State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe is a top destination for visitors. Moreover, it ranks among Germany’s largest natural history museums. We value both research and the visitor experience. Our focus includes research, collection, preservation, and knowledge sharing. These responsibilities are closely connected.

Visitors mainly experience the museum through our exhibitions. Therefore, we aim to make natural history accessible to all.

Our permanent displays cover more than 5,000 square metres. They feature native and exotic animals in realistic dioramas. Additionally, live animals from the Vivarium are part of the exhibits. For example, the giant salamander Andrias helps explain Earth’s history. Meanwhile, a ten-metre pterosaur model appears to soar above the atrium. Rocks, fossils, and minerals reveal the geological past of the Upper Rhine region.

Besides the permanent exhibits, we also host temporary exhibitions on diverse topics.

Our scientists work on global research projects. As a result, we present the latest findings in our exhibits.

The Vivarium is a major highlight. Aquariums and terrariums recreate natural habitats for exotic species. Visitors see animals such as poison dart frogs, rattlesnakes, octopuses, and catsharks.

We also offer educational programmes for all ages. These include school tours, birthday parties, lectures, and special events. Ultimately, we aim to spark curiosity about nature’s complexity.

Finally, our experts contribute to international research and conservation. Their findings support policy-making and help protect biodiversity worldwide.
