CIRAD herbarium contains 70,000 specimens, including 60 types, representing nearly 5 500 species, mostly from the dry tropical zone of Africa, but also from other tropical regions. Collection Abstract

CIRAD is the French agricultural research and cooperation organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions. This institution conserve multiple naturalist collections: an herbarium, two tropical xylotheque (Montpellier and Kourou), entomology collections… The herbarium contains 70,000 specimens, including 60 types, representing nearly 5 500 species, mostly from the dry tropical zone of Africa, but also from other tropical regions. Started in the 50’s this herbarium was initially specialized on the forage and grazing species of tropical Africa. Since 1995 he has become the ALF herbarium of CIRAD and continues to be added by more diverse themes: tropical weed control, forest ecology, agroecology, ethnobotany… In Montpellier, the CIRAD’s collection of tropical and temperate wood samples is one of the largest in the world. Most of these samples are related to herbaria deposited in various botanical institutes all around the world. More than 35,400 specimens representing more than 8,400 species, around 2,160 genera and 235 botanical families. Samples are from all continents: Africa (45.8%), America (34.5%) Asia (13.4%) Oceania (4.4%) and Europe (1.9%) for a total of 123 tropical and temperate countries. In addition, the French Guiana Xylothèque is a collection of 2500 samples of 2500 trees representing 600 species, preserved in the wood science laboratory in Kourou.
