DiSSCo - An Open Window to Our Planet's Natural Diversity

Thursday, 16 April, 2020

Europe is a global leader in collections-based research, hosting 80% of the known bio and geodiversity, meaning 1.5 billion specimens documented and curated by over 5000 scientists.

We are very happy to share with you the promotional film that has been produced under ICEDIG project. We are proud about our community's combined efforts to further advance innovation and consolidation towards DiSSCo, the large-scale digitisation effort for natural heritage.

This short film showcases the active role played by ICEDIG in supporting the digital transformation of Natural Science Collections, explains the relationship between ICEDIG and DiSSCo, and points to the remaining challenges after the completion of the design study project.

It highlights the importance of digitizing Natural History Collections and making data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR). These collections contain vital information to understand the current challenges such as biodiversity loss and provide evidence for implementing policies and help model the impact of climate change on our planet.
