- Analytical electron microscopy facilities
- Laboratory of molecular systematics
- Analytical electron microscopy facilities: Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM): EDS, EBSD, monoCL Equipment: Jeol JSM 6610-LV, Jeol JSM 6400, Jeol JSM 5000 Neoscope Electron Microprobe (EMP): local (2 µm3) chemical analyses for elements (B-U) Equipment: Jeol JXA 8530-F
- Laboratory of molecular systematics: All equipment necessary for DNA extraction (e.g., DNA clean room, refrigerators, deep freezers, incubators, grinding mill, centrifuges), PCR amplification (thermocyclers) cloning (e.g., incubator, autoclave)
- Analytical electron microscopy facilities: Electron microscopy is applied to study objects down to micro- and even nanometer scale (0,000001 mm) in a structural or analytical way.
- Morphology imaging of the studied object up to a magnification of 300000 times in a scanning electron microscope
- Imaging of different chemical phases also up to a magnification of 300000 times
- Detailed chemical analysis of the sample, in an electron microprobe down to trace elements (parts per million, ppm scale, 0,0001%)
- Crystallographic information, internal deformation inside the studied object down to micrometer scale (0,001 mm)
- Internal structures of the studied object (cathodoluminescence)
2. Laboratory of molecular systematics: In the DNA laboratory research projects concerning systematics, phylogeny, phylogeography, and population genetics are performed. The principle of molecular systematics is based on the fact that the similarity of the DNA molecule reflects the degree of relatedness between taxa. DNA sequencing is performed to clarify phylogenetic questions in the broadest sense, microsatellite analyses are performed for population analyses and genetic monitoring. In addition, the DNA laboratory harbours a DNA and tissue collection.

The Natural History Museum Vienna is one of the largest and most significant natural science museums in the world. Today it houses a collection of about 30 million specimens and artifacts. The collections of the NHM were founded in 1750 by Emperor Franz I. Stephan of Lorraine, the husband of Maria Theresa. The current building was completed in 1889. The museum has a total staff of around 300, including about 60 scientists. Research departments and collections include anthropology, botany, geology, meteorites, mineralogy, petrology, paleontology, prehistory, and zoology, as well as an archive and extensive libraries. Several technical departments, scientific laboratories, and taxidermy facilities complete the portfolio of the museum. Altogether, the NHM Vienna is one of the largest and most important research institutions in the geological and biological sciences in Austria.
