The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international agreement which aims to ensure the safe handling, transport and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health. It was adopted on 29 January 2000 and entered into force on 11 September 2003.

The aim of the conference is to develop forward-looking perspectives for the botanical profession in the twenty-first century. The conference will provide a platform for exchange and dialogue to:
* Take stock of global, regional and national issues and challenges that botany can contribute to mitigating;
* Review the state of the art for the study and practice of botany; and
* Identify actionable elements for re-orienting the discipline to make the essential innovative scientific and technological contributions needed for current and future generations.

GBIF. Global Biodiversity Information Facility
The Governing Board meeting, including the Science Symposium, will take place at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on 16-19 September 2014. The official Governing Board meeting is only open to Heads of delegations and up to two additional attendees per delegation, and observers specifically invited by GBIF. However, the Public Symposium: Innovation and Impact through GBIF, on 17 September, is open to the public and press, subject to prior registration.
