{"id":5597,"date":"2024-05-21T13:33:27","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T11:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cetaf.org\/dest\/?page_id=5597"},"modified":"2024-05-22T08:46:28","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T06:46:28","slug":"systematics-and-phylogeny-of-insects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cetaf.org\/dest\/systematics-and-phylogeny-of-insects\/","title":{"rendered":"Systematics and Phylogeny of Insects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"entry-title main_title\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5600 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cetaf.org\/dest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SMNS-Entomology_course-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/h1>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The course is held at the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart between the 01.07. and 26.07 and combines lectures, labs and field work.<\/p>\n<p>Topics that will be covered in the lectures and practical sessions include:<br \/>\n&#8211; Evolution of insects<br \/>\n&#8211; Basic phylogeny of the Pterygota<br \/>\n&#8211; Phylogeny of the Hemimetabola &amp; Holometabola<br \/>\n&#8211; Integrative taxonomy<br \/>\n&#8211; Integrative phylogenetics<br \/>\n&#8211; Cladistic analysis<br \/>\n&#8211; Scientific presentation and writing<br \/>\n&#8211; Fossil History<br \/>\n&#8211; Advanced research techniques including MicroCT scanning and 3D Visualization, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)<\/p>\n<p>The practical part of the course will include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Identification exercises: Aquatic insects, Paraneoptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera<br \/>\n&#8211; Methodology of collecting insects, including field trip to T\u00fcbingen (Spitzberg, Goldersbachtal)<br \/>\n&#8211; Important preparation techniques for the collection, such as dry preparation, genital preparation, wet preparation, as well as critical point drying or chemical drying<br \/>\n&#8211; Documentation of collection material via photography (AutoMontage, Keyence) and digital drawing<br \/>\n&#8211; Histology<br \/>\n&#8211; Tour through the amber collection, visit to the amber grinding laboratory<\/p>\n<p>The course is part of the curriculum at the University of Hohenheim and will be held with a group of students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the first week, the focus is on learning scientific collection and preparation techniques. In the course room (Schloss Rosenstein) of the SMNS, a separate workstation is set up for each student, which can be used for preparation and identification work at any time during the course by agreement and under supervision.
